The 14 Best Natural and Mineral Sunscreens

There are two types of sunscreens: mineral and chemical. The former uses zinc or titanium dioxide to physically scatter and deflect the DNA-damaging UV rays that can lead to premature skin aging and cancer. Mineral sunscreens tend to be more natural and gentle, therefore safer for babies and those with sensitive skin. Chemical sunscreens use ingredients like avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, octocrylene, or oxybenzone to create a chemical reaction on your skin, turning the harmful UV rays into heat.

In recent years, there have been mounting concerns over the health and safety of chemical sunscreen filters, particularly oxybenzone. Studies have linked exposure to chemical UV filters to birth defects and endocrine disruption, as well as to allergenic reactions. What's more, chemical filters have been shown to contribute to coral bleaching and environmental harm.

If you're ready to make the switch to something a little more natural, shop this list of the 14 best mineral sunscreens that make pasty white noses a thing of the past. SEE THE PRODUCTS.
