It feels like history has been priming us for the big takeover of Jacob Tierney. After all, Canadian TV shows have been finding their success south of the border in surprising new ways. Schitt’s Creek broke barriers and even took home Emmy Awards even though it used to live on the network that very few people knew existed. Kim’s Convenience and Jacob’s previous show, Letterkenny, left fans laughing out loud after they found passionate fans via streaming services. But things were totally different this time as the Canadian showrunner, writer, director, and actor gained a new level of popularity never seen before after just one call to Rachel Reid, the author of the Game Changers series.
Even before Heated Rivalry premiered, fans in the United States were already looking for ways to be able to watch it live. Nine days before its big premiere, it finally gained a distributor with HBO. But talk to fans and to Jacob and they will remind you about something important: This has been and always will be a Canadian production.
“I think it’s important to remember I don’t work in Hollywood,” he told Cosmopolitan back in August. “I don’t work in that system at all. We didn’t make the show that way. We made it here in Canada and I approach everything differently.”
Part of that approach is also in the name of his new book, I’ll Believe in Anything, which offers viewers a special behind-the-scenes look at how the series was made with special annotated scripts by Jacob. He not only believed in Rachel’s characters and story, but he also believed in those around him, and, most importantly, he believed in himself to bring it all to life.
Cosmopolitan chatted with Jacob to talk about his brand-new book, why fans might be surprised by some of the changes that were made from page to screen, and the joys of being a collaborator in the TV industry.
