At a recent baby shower for the child of one of my best friends, I walked outside, sat in a sunny spot on the patio furniture, and proceeded to read
The Hollywood Godfather. (Great book, BTW.)
Guests could see me through the glass double doors and proceeded to laugh. Someone even took a photo of me and posted it on Instagram with the caption, "Party of one." After about 15 minutes the host's husband came outside, asked me about what I was doing, and admonished me for not mingling with everyone else. I explained I was taking a breather and having some alone time. This all took place after I spent 45 minutes chatting with people in the room and asking my friend who was throwing the shower for permission to excuse myself. She had no problem with it and suggested I enjoy the warm weather outside rather than sit inside indoors on the couch.
So why the uproar?
