It's a new year, a new decade and I want a fresh start. I don't want to think about Harvey Weinstein. I want to read 10 books—even write my own! But whether I like it or not, his criminal trial—where he will face felony charges on two counts of predatory sexual assault, two counts of rape, and one count of a criminal sexual act—starts today in New York City.
[Editor's note: Weinstein and his legal team have denied the accusations against him.] It will be a media frenzy and the world will be watching to find out if he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Once again, his face will be all over social media and the news, and once again, I will shudder and want to look away.
As the trial begins, I've been asking myself what justice will look like. No amount of years in jail can undo the harm and trauma he has inflicted on me and more than 100 other women. One of the definitions of justice is to be concerned with moral rightness and a deserved punishment. Another mentions a genuine respect for people. But Harvey Weinstein showed none of us respect. We were disposable.
Yet, even with all the accusations against him, I'm scared he will walk free.
