In the wake of the Supreme Court's troubling decision to allow states to ban drag shows, two-time winner of RuPaul's Drag Race (and all-around LGBTQ+ icon) Jinkx Monsoon is gearing up to take over a pair of popular roles on two New York stages this summer: Matron "Mama" Morton in Chicago and Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors.
"We're sick of our politicians. We're sick of our leaders. We can see their bullshit from a mile away. We see through all their lies. And we don't want that in our art right now," says Jinkx, who is set to rejoin the Chicago cast as Mama in June after making her Broadway debut in 2023. "We don't want people bullshitting us. I'm genuinely excited to put on these shows and bring my authenticity to the stage because that's what I know how to contribute to this world. That's powerful. That's what the audience shows up for."
And she's right! Chicago saw its best box office sales in 26 years with her in their company. Before returning to the women's block in Cook County Jail from June 27 through July 12, Jinkx will be joining Off-Broadway's Little Shop of Horrors as Audrey beginning April 2. This marks the first time a drag queen will play the role in a major production of the famed musical. (No big deal.) But Jinkx is used to making history.
Cosmopolitan sat down with the queen of queens to talk about gender-blind casting, living out her dreams, and her new chosen name outside of drag. |
